When a storm took your fence down, take photos of the fence and of whatever hit it before you move anything. Then call your insurer and a fence company. Keep clear of any downed wire and report it to the electric utility.
Half my fence blew down. Who can fix it fast and what will it cost?
Call or text us at (734) 441-3554 with a photo and a rough length. A section flat on the ground with broken posts is a major repair, $900 to $2,500 on national 2026 figures. Ann Arbor has a great many large trees, so one summer thunderstorm can damage fences across the whole city in an afternoon. The sooner you call, the sooner you are on the schedule.
My dogs are in the yard and the fence is open to the road. What can be done right away?
We can close the opening before the real repair. That means bracing what still stands and fixing a temporary panel across the gap. Tell us when you call that dogs, small children or a pool are involved, so the visit is treated as urgent.
Is there an extra charge for emergency or weekend fence repair?
Ask when you book, because practice differs from one company to the next. A temporary closure now and the permanent repair during normal hours usually costs less than a full repair done out of hours.
Does homeowners insurance cover a fence knocked down by a storm or a tree?
Often it does, as an other structure on your property. The answer for your fence depends on your policy, the deductible and what caused the damage, and it has to come from your insurer or agent. On a small repair, the deductible can be larger than the cost. We provide an itemized estimate for the claim.
My neighbor's tree fell on my fence. Whose insurance pays?
In most cases you claim on your own policy for your own fence, no matter whose tree it was. It may be different if the tree was dead or clearly unsafe and the owner had been told. Ask your insurer how they handle it. A tree on the strip between the sidewalk and the street is normally the city's, so report that one to the city.
The insurer offered much less than the repair quote because the fence is old. Now what?
Request the calculation in writing. Many policies pay the depreciated value of an old fence, not the cost of a new one. Reply with an itemized estimate. If a gap remains, replacing just the damaged run is often the practical route.
The storm knocked the fence down and my neighbor says it is mine. Who pays?
Whoever owns the fence pays, and ownership follows the land it stands on. Michigan's fence statute, Public Act 34 of 1978, only makes a neighbor share the cost if that neighbor uses the fence to keep animals in. It does not divide the cost of a normal yard fence. Only a licensed surveyor can locate the line. See our shared fence page for more.
